Asphalt paving is the process of installing or maintaining roadways and parking lots that are made from asphalt. Asphalt is a combination of specially sized stone aggregate combined with sand and asphalt cement binder (bitumen). When aggregates + sand + bitumen are combined together and installed properly, they form a flexible pavement that is very smooth to drive on compared to concrete or pavers. In fact, asphalt is the preferred choice for the vast majority of roadways and parking lots throughout Florida.

Advantages of Asphalt
One advantage of asphalt is that the uppermost layer of asphalt can be used as a wearing course. This layer may vary in thickness from 1.0” to 2.0” in thickness. The uppermost wearing course of asphalt pavement receives all the wear and tear from traffic and once it has deteriorated, it can be milled and repaved, without having to remove and replace the lower layers. This process of milling and repaving just the upper wearing course (aka as the top “lift”) can save a lot of cost and time compared to removing the entire asphalt roadway. In fact, this unique benefit of asphalt has resulted in asphalt being the most recycled material from all construction materials!
